Principles of Reading

  • Touch words read left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.
  • Rhyme one word with another.
  • Use pictures to read unknown words.
  • Identify uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Identify letter sounds.
  • Read simple CVC words (i.e., cat).
  • Understand words, syllables, and sounds; identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words.
  • Read grade level sight (frequently used) words.

Reading (With Help from the Teacher) 

  • Ask and answer questions about stories read or heard; make predictions, make inferences, and draw conclusions.
  • Retell a familiar story with beginning, middle, and end.
  • Recognize and describe characters, setting, problem, and solution; identify the cause of an event.
  • Ask and answer questions about informational text; give key details and draw conclusions; use text features.
  • Summarize a text heard, read, or viewed.
  • Determine the meanings of words and phrases; identify how words and phrases are used.

Reading (Independently)

  • Recognize and sort types of texts.
  • Compare familiar texts, topics, and ideas.
  • Identify roles of the author and illustrator.
  • Identify who is telling the story (narrator or characters).
  • Describe how the illustrations and the text are connected.
  • Read simple texts fluently with understanding of the meaning.

Writing

  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to write a narrative piece.
  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to write an opinion piece.
  • Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to write an informative piece.

Communication

  • Participate and practice conversation skills in small and whole groups.
  • Ask and answer questions about topics that interest me.
  • Participate in shared research.
  • Identify a speaker’s purpose, introduction, and conclusion.
